Global Forum of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action - Bangkok 96

The WABA's Forum is over day last friday. To Elizabet Helsing, member of the
Directorate of Health, Norway, "the the Forum was usefulness: workshops and
discussions were about realities, not about abstractions or speculations. My
personal agenda is to hurry home and start preparing for the next century by
writing up a strategic plan for breastfeeding for my country. It will be
reassuring for my colleagues and the politicians with whom I work to know
that these ideas, principles and policies were generated with the World
Alliance for Breastfeeding Action.

Nomajoni Ntombela, Swaziland Director of the Schools HIV/AIDS & Population
Education (SHAPE) and of IBFAN/Africa, says that "our regional office
(IBFAN) covers more than 30 countries, and the first thing we will do is
report to all these groups about the important issues covered here. In
addition to the information from workshops is the discussion of this issue
of the rights of the child. It will be important to find a way of
reconciling this without threatening people".

To Anwar Fazal, WABA chairperson, from Malaysia, "the single most important
issue at this Forum has been the human rights dimension of the breastfeeding
issue. We have a cluster of rights and obligations concerning children,
concerning women and concerning nature. We have a cluster of rights and
obligations concerning children, concerning women, and concerning nature".

Denise Arcoverde, from Brazil, was choosed to coordinate the World
Breastfeeding Week 97, on the theme Breastfeeding & Ecology.

WABA's Ten Links to the 21st Century are:

2. Food Security
3. Women's Empowerment
