Barb, when I was reading your post I thought that this baby is hungry and it
may be a milk supply problem. Here are the relevant phrases that were red
flags for me <<voracious sucker....clamping down....wants to suck and nurse
most of the time....mom's nipples started cracking/sore<<
the other potential is tongue tie, which a history of good milk surge at day
3-5 but poor wt gain meaning poor milk transfer.
i am not sure about the 2 oz wtgain in office. was it a digital scale,
zero'd properly between weighings etc? if this was a true gain, and baby
does this every feed, then he should gain wt well and will only need to be
re-weighed maybe a couple times to document he's gaining well.
maybe he had a good feed becoz mom was very attentive and usinmg compression
at that feed. when i have small or preterm or near term infants i usualy
discuss w/ mom that she will have to be very attentive to baby's feeidng and
determine if he was really transferring or not. she won't be able to talk on
the phone an d watch a tv show just yet.
i would go back over the history, and do a good oral exam, and a feed
observation or two w/ milk transfer weights.
