I have taken a new job as the Health Education Supervisor at a neighboring
county health department. I started last week. this is the same agency where
I did my internship last summer. I am also going to stay in the LC pool at
the hospital/milk bank and work there 2 weekend days/ month.
As the health education supervisor, my first duty was to clean out the
education closet---that's right-- I got rid of all the ABM company brochures,
gifts, pacifiers, videos, etc. I felt so good!! That was a pain in my butt
last year during my internship!
Someone last year had asked me to save some of the brochures ( the old ABM
ones) and I have one of each so if you will email me, I will try to get them
to you. But I would appreciate postage.I only have one copy of each but
forgot who wanted those. I'll remember who you are when I see your name! One
brochure is dated 1975.
I also am sitting on the BFing Task Force. There is a Peer Counselor program
with the Cooperative Extension Program. The program administrator is not an
IBCLC but is a RD who I have worked with before. It is strange to sit on a
BFing Task Force and be there as a health dept administrator and not as an
IBCLC. They said they will have to be careful not to abuse my skills and
knowledge as an IBCLC while I am working as a Health Educator. I will be the
one teaching the prenatal classes as well as developing policies and
procedures, and previewing and ordering educational materials. ( I get to do
other things also like teach nutrition, diabetes education, health promotion,
sex education, family planning etc both in the clinic and in the community.
And do administrative stuff)
This is what I went back to college for and I am excited. I will have a
regular salary, with benefits, retirement and all that. Always before I have
been contracted and did not get benefits.I am planning on keeping my private
practice also since that is a very small practice.
The agency also is letting me have educational leave for the ILCA conference
even though that isn't exactly the scope of my work. So I get to see ya'll in
DC in July.
I am still having computer problems at home but have a tremendously fast
computer at work so I can read my mail there.

Barbara Whitehead, IBCLC, BS
Eastern NC ( where it is supposed to be 95 degrees this weekend)
