Dear all

The medication used by the monkey lady in South Africa was Sulpiride. Trade
name in South Africa Eglonyl and in the UK Dolmatil, Sulparex or Sulpitil.
It is a benzamide, antipsychotic/antidepressant, selective dopamine 2
antoganist. Used in the treatment of depression and apparently
schitzophrenia too. I don't think it is available in US or Australia.

Sulpiride has been used in South Africa for probably over 20 years now. It
can dramatically improve milk supply in 24 hrs in some women. Often used as
the first choice in treatment of post-natal depression or psychosis. Dosage
is usually 50 mg orally 3 x day. The women should be weaned off it and not
abruptly stopped. I personally have seen some very good results.

Sulpiride is also used together with nipple stimulation as the exclusive
means of stimulating lactation is adoption mothers. Have once again seen
very good result in women who have never been pregnant being able to
exclusively breastfeed. Also helps women who have supply problems after
reduction surgery.

The manufacturers monograph cautions against use for lactation on the basis
that no studies on neonatal effects have been done. However, this is a well
known and documented treatment in South Africa which in the many years of
use has not presented neonatal problems. Often women do not need to use it
for more than a few days anyway.

Obviously this is second line when all else fails after one has done all the
lactation things you ladies are so expert at.

Kind Regards
