Hmmm, having just surreptitiously experienced the nasty knife cut alongside
a tight wedding band (23 years on Feb 14 - both of us, 20+ pounds - my
husband, not me...) and trying to remove it to get stitches, it would have
been far better to use soap and water than KY jelly to slither it off, but
the ED staff was reluctant to have him wash his hands with soap and water.

His wound was then cleansed with iodine solution, but the effect was the
same - clean the wound before stitching it closed. If we rub in other
ointments/milk/lanolin/whatever into "dirty skin" are we not enclosing the
potential infective micro-organisms?

I'm all for "moist wound healing" on fingers nearly cut off, as well as
nipple wounds, but a clean base for healing makes sense to me.

Best wishes,
Sam Doak
Who removed stitches without supervision... Uh oh...

Hi Diane
Soap on wounded skin? OWWW! The Australian Breastfeeding Association
recommends that mothers use nothing more than water and/or human milk on
their nipples so as to avoid interfering with the natural lubrication
provided by the Montgomery Glands Nina Berry Australia
