Thanks to Joylyn, Gonneke, Nikki, Peg and Sara for your responses.

Joylyn, the things you suggest to encourage bonding are all things that I
would also suggest to assist in the transition to breastfeeding....with the
addition of continuing to offer the opportunity and allowing the child to
see lots of breastfeeding. Good advice.

Gonneke, I still wonder where the 1 year and older is too old thing comes
from because I have heard it multiple times from women who have contacted
LLL. Perhaps it is just that 1 year is a convenient line to draw and that
these are isolated individuals. I hope no one thought that I was
crtiticising LLL because I wholeheartedly believe in the necessity of a
supportive community for the success of breastfeeding and for many women
that can only be resourced through mother-to-mother support groups like LLL
and ABA.

Thanks Nikki for your congratulations on my paper in Breastfeeding Review. I
am always really glad when a paper gets accepted. I hope it provides food
for thought. A lot of the ideas presented in this paper were assisted in
formulation by discussion on Lactnet over the last few years.

Peg, I suspect that you are right, that those who tell mothers that an older
baby can't breastfeed may be trying to prevent the mother from being
disappointed. The problem is that while it is true that many babies will not
be able to breastfeed there are many who will and those mothers and children
will be unable to breastfeed without knowledgeable support.

Sara, Good on you for supporting your sister in law. You are right, there is
very little information available on the subject. Darillyn and I have been
collecting the experiences of women who have attempted to breastfeed a child
4 months or older at placement for a few years now but it will be a while
yet before we will have a big enough sample to publish something
substantial. I might end up writing a book at some stage but it'll be a
loooong while down the track. However, the Australian Breastfeeding
Association has recently published a new version of their Relactation and
Adoptive Breastfeeding booklet which contains a lot of information on the
subject of non-infant adoptive breastfeeding. As far as I am aware this is
the only publication that addresses this subject (aside from some isolated
case histories). Disclaimer: I think the booklet is good but I'm biased
because I wrote it however, I have no financial interest in it. If anyone
would like more information about how to purchase the booklet please contact
me privately.
I agree with you about Diana West's info. I also think it is excellent.

I guess I haven't an answer to my question but at least it appears that
there hasn't been an official line that children 1 or older at placement
can't breastfeed. However, can I ask leaders on Lactnet to let fellow
leaders know that it is possible for older children to breastfeed, that
breastfeeding can be very helpful to such mums and children (esp if they
have a history of hurt) and that mums really, really, really need their
support and encouragement!!
