I love the Haberman's, too. Pricey, but worth it.

I've seen complete clefts (lip, hard and soft palate involvement) and the
spectrum to just a nick out of the soft palate. One baby had a little
triangle shape missing, including the uvula, another had a split uvula. The
one baby who nursed well had a submucosal cleft. His mother was fastidious
about latching, and he transferred milk well.

Something to keep in mind, too, is the number of other children or outside
obligations the mother has. One of my moms had a baby with a cleft as well
as Down Syndrome. This was a twin, and the 8th child. She pumped in the car,
while transporting her other children to sports/school/everything else. Many
of the local mothers have had 2 or more children before their cleft-affected
child was born. It makes a difference in the reality of what the mother (and
baby) can accomplish. Pumping, cleaning and feeding a cleft-affected baby
takes a lot of time. It's a slower feeding, because of the risk of shooting
everything up the nose, working with the timing, because the soft palate
will not rise to close off the sinuses, little things that crop up.

As I mentioned before, none of my moms have had the experience of a baby
transferring milk well. Many have been frustrated, because the literature is
very positive, "If you try hard enough, it will happen" type of comments. We
work more on realistic expectations, and finding our own positive
experiences. It's a rewarding experience with this bunch of
women/mothers/babies, that's for sure!

Best wishes,
Heather "Sam" Doak

<<To all who have responded so far, thanks. I haven't had occasion to
really
study a Haberman before and I can't remember the last time I was so pleased
with the design of such a product.

I don't know how large a palatal cleft can be before breastfeeding becomes
well nigh impossible. Any help?
