It sounds as if the baby is not so interested in *being fed*. Cups, spoons,
and mom's finger are all Mother-led, not baby-led. First solids are an
exploration of taste and texture for the baby, and for some it is also an
issue of SELF. The baby is learning about his world and how he can manage his
body and mind in his world. (Have you ever seen a six month old baby
repeatedly tap himself on the head with a rattle? You just have to wonder- he
must be teaching himself something of the rattle, otherwise why on earth would
he do it ?)
Some babies will simply not take much "other food" until they can feed
themselves easily. Perhaps the Mom will have more of a mess on her hands
than she would like, but she could sit the baby at the highchair and offer him
some nutritious soft foods to self-feed, while she and the rest of the family
are enjoying their meals. With practice, *most* of it will go into his mouth
;-)
