Hi Anne,
I have a friend who suffers this with each pregnancy, it's not very
pleasant. Did she go full term? Was she induced? It's my understanding that
the problem with cholestasis is only during pregnancy and that she will
recover now she has given birth. Often babies are induced early because
(apart from tthe discomfort for the mum) there is heightened risk of
stillbirth. Breastfeeding however is not a problem, there is no reason I am
aware of why she can't breastfeed that is associated with this condition.
Certainl;y my friend has breastfed each of her 3 children and now pregnant
(and starting to itch) with her 4th due in Jan will breastfeed this one too!
My friend has found that there is not a lot of information around about
cholestasis and that HCPS may display a high level of ignorance. Certainly
she did not even have a diagnosis with her first child.
