There are several excellent resources for
information pertaining to postpartum depression in
the Phila, PA area that I use for referrals for the
mothers that I see in my LC practice, as well as the
postpartum doula practice. Fortunately, LC's can
have the ability and hopefully, early contact with
families, to help identify the risk factors and offer
families local resources. I worked with OB's at a
local hospital to raise awareness of PPD after there
seemed to be a run of patients experiencing PPD
and hospital staff didn't know where to refer or get
further information. It turned out to be very
educational for me.
1. Depression After Delivery is a national volunteer
organization which provides a support network and
printed materials for anyone interested in PPD.
Their hotline # is 800 - 944-4PPD (4773). Regular # is
215 - 295 - 3994. They are based in Morrisville, PA.
2. The Postpartum Stress Center located in
Rosemont, PA was started by Karen Kleinman,
MSW. Karen can be contacted at 610 - 525 - 7527
The Center's mailing address is 1062 Lancaster
Ave., Rosemont Plaza, Suite 8, Rosemont, PA
19010. Karen and her colleagues are excellent
resources. She has written a very good resource
book called "This Isn't What I Expected -
Overcoming Postpartum Depression" published by
Bantam Books. The tagline is "Recognizing and
Recovering from Depression and Anxiety after
Childbirth" Her newest book was recently released
called "The Postpartum Husband - Practical
Solutions for Living with Postpartum Depression"
which contains information and recommendations
to help partners deal with the impact of postpartum
depression.
3. A book called "Postpartum Depresion - A
Comprehensive Approach for Nurses" by Kathleen
Kendall - Tackett, published by Sage Publications
1993 is a more scientific approach and information
than the above materials.
4. I have not had personal contact with this
organization, but have heard through others that
Postpartum Support International is another terrific
group to contact for info. This # is 805- 967 - 7636.

(I have no monetary interest in any of the above
organizations or publications. I have just found
them to be very educational)

I thought I would post this to the whole list since I
know I occasionally see women in my practice
who are experiencing PPD and hope the
information is helpful to others.
