Sorry everyone for my burst of postings, I've been reading Lactnet
religiously for the past couple of weeks and haven't had the time to
respond because I'm starting my OWN practice and finishing up with my
supervisors where I trained. Its a big step and I'm a little nervous after
the goodbye dinner where they shared twenty years of their nightmare cases.
Some of you have expressed concern about doing something for relactation in
emergency conditions and I think the expertise of IBCLCs would be extremely
beneficial, not just at the present time, but for future situations. I
know many of the nutritionists involved at these organizations and because
of this I KNOW your expertise would be helpful. One of the ways to get
involved with some of the US based organizations would be to see about
joining the CORE Nutrition Working Group - or if not that - posting a
reminder on the Community CORE listserve about the basic principals of
infant feeding in emergency conditions. I have not yet seen anything on
that list reminding everyone about the importance of breastfeeding in
emergency conditiosn, let alone relactation.
Someone mentioned wanting to volunteer their services and I have to say
that the larger organizations have enough of a budget that they can
certainly afford to pay for professional services, while some of the
smaller organizations (I can think of some good ones that are run by 4 or 5
people) might benefit from some volunteer assistance.
Anyone wanting some contacts for this or interested in posting to this
other Listserve is welcome to contact me.
Best, Susan Burger
