Thanks, Becky! I get the feeling that some people here think we are going to
swaddle these babies 24/7, and that we will ignore signs of
illness/hunger/need for development -- nothing could be further from the
truth. If a baby is hungry or in pain, none of the 5 Ss are going to calm
him. It doesn't make him "tune out" or "shut down," they help them to
organize. Frankly, I don't care if you swaddle with the arms down at the
side, crossed at the midline or so his hands can get into his mouth -- I just
want them swaddled enough so they can reorganize and not get out of the
blankie until they have calmed.

As for not swaddling, can we have a show of hands of everyone that works in a
hospital that has to UNSWADDLE babies before you can get them to the breast.
I have yet to see a baby come into the mom's room from the nursery, or have
an RN finish examining a baby, or even have them handed to mom unswaddled.
Y'wanna talk about swaddling 24/7? Come to our hospital -- I'll show you
3600/year baby burritos.

And if you haven't tried the 5Ss, don't knock it until you do....it's a TOOL,
my friends, another good TOOL in our box of many tools.
