It was cooking from scratch --and other economies--that enabled many of us to conserve family funds and thus not have to leave our babies for outside employment in the days before moms were able to telecommute. 

So, for us, cooking from scratch helped preserve the breastfeeding relationship.

Other recommended classics:  The Heart Has Its Own Reasons by Mary Ann Cahill, Co-Founder of LLL, 1983 and Of Cradles and Careers, by Kaye Lowman 1985.  They'd both count as USA Gender Studies History texts now!
