Dear Phillipa,

I believe it is being used by community midwives in some instances but
I did not think I suggested that it was currently being used in hospitals.
I may have implied this in the syntax of the sentence, however. When it
was first removed arbitrarily there was resistance to its removal and it
came back at that time.

It was still in use in l983 for sure and that is l6 years ago.

I am glad I created controversy it helps people to think??

I still have the evidence of my own eyes and Tinc Benz worked without
creating more trouble and very quickly. Remember we had our mothers in
for up to 7-10 days and could see the fruits of our labour even if up until
the 80's our labours were driven by routines. As an a charge midwife I
would have read any memo which banned its use and none such arrived.

As a result of this Email I have been told that "Its removal was
instigated by midwives who had been attending some of the newly arrived
conferences on breastfeeding. As often happens a story was told about one
case of broken skin as a result of its (?poor) application.

Glad to have you back.

I will be down to see NMAA new quarters in the next week and with DE as
requested by Karen C

| Tinc benz co was used routinely in maternity hospitals for sore nipples
in
| Australia some 20-30 years ago. It is useful when applied in an actual
crack
| as it aids healing. (A friend of mine whose husband was an Olympic
gymnast
| used it on cracks in his hands for this purpose). The problem was that
it
| was often applied liberally all over nipples which were sore rather than
| cracked, causing damage to healthy skin.
|
| NMAA strongly worked to stop it being used because of its misuse. I am
| interested that Bev Walker suggests that it is coming back to use in
| hospitals in Australia. I had not heard this. I only hope that it is
being
| used wisely and not causing more problems than it solves.
