Heather I think Mari was referring to pain developing while nursing a three
year old during a pregnancy Not nursing a newborn.

Mari this was certainly my experience. I nursed during 2 pregnancies and
developed severe pain while nursing. It developed mid pregnancy and
increased through the second trimester stabilizing through the third. It did
not resolve until the birth. However the pain was considerably different
from the pain experienced from nipple trauma. (When one infant was a few
months old and still solely breastfed I suffered 2nd degree chemical burns
over my breasts, nipples and areolas so have a clear memory of nursing a
child on an open wound). It was more of a fingernail on chalk board
sensation during the pregnancies than actual pulling, chewing or tearing.
So we may be talking about 2 very distinct things.
As an aside I bathed the burns in expressed milk after each feeding and
although the healing felt slow (after all I WAS nursing 8-10/24hr) the
scarring was minimal and is no longer visable 2 decades later. I never
seriously considered weaning as I was terrified of the effect of engorgement
on the wounds and breastfeeding was just how things were done. The hardest
part was keeping the baby from touching the wounds as he was at that
stroking and picking stage.
