Dear Kimme --
You say the mother noticed the baby nursing differently and she's got
sore nipples again. Could the baby be teething, and reacting
dramatically to the discomfort? It seems like a very sensitive/reactive
baby.

Also -- as part of starting solids, is the baby using a sippee cup (a
cup with a lid and a hard-plastic spout)? I've known several cases
(personal experience included) where an older baby suddenly gets really
rough and "chewing" on the breast for that reason. I was really baffled
by this sudden change until I noticed that my daughter's sippy cup was
just chewed ragged. I started giving her an open cup, and helping her
use it, and she calmed down at the breast again. Later on, in
toddlerhood, we went back to covered cups with no problem.

You might want to explore other possibilities for why the baby has
always been so unhappy at the breast -- overactive letdown, too slow a
letdown, food allergies, and such. Good luck. She sounds like a most
determined mother, to have come through those early trials.
