It is possible that a mother with painful breasts from mastitis and/or
cracks in her nipples is more likely to give the baby a supplemental feed,
thus increasing the rate of mixed feeding in the mastitis group, which would
also increase the rate of HIV transmission.  This is a complicated question
and certainly not easy to get reliable data on.
