Dear Lactnetters,
I did an in-service at a pediatric office today and one of the docs
mentioned he didn't want to encourage mothers to breastfeed if they smoked.
His concern is not necessarily the nicotine, but other carcinogens in the
cigarrette. I didn't have any answer for him regarding that and I haven't
found anything in the archives. If anyone can point me to resources I would
be grateful.
Judy, it is my opinion that when one aknowledges teh fact that cigarettes
contai substances that it may be harmfull for the baby to ingest these, one
might as wel wonder if it is a responsible and thus advisable act for a mother
to smoke. If a mother isa harming herself, perhaps even deadly, then she
endangeres her child with the possibility to become a motherless chi8ld way too
soon.
So, in my -not so humble- opnion it is not a question for docs to either
encourage breastfeeding or not in a smoking mom, but to discuss the fact of
either smoking or not for a woman who is responsible for raising a child at all.
It is not a breastfeeding issue.

Warmly,

Gonneke van Veldhuizen, Dutch IBCLC in Germany
