One of the reasons there is such pressure to get baby onto breast quickly is
because mothers are often discharged before the baby has it all figured out.
Much of this may have to do with birth intervention. Separation in hospital
interfering with mothers learning to read their babies cues and inexperienced
mothers that may have no breastfeeding role model may be other factors.
I may use a shield in the hospital when I worry that the ease of bottle
feeding will cause the mother to just give up. I know that with a committed
mother finger or cup feeding will just be a crutch to get baby to breast.
Wouldn't it be nice if mom and baby could either stay in the hospital till it
came together or an experienced supportive family member could be waiting at
every new mother's home.
