Dear Friends:
Out of the past 20 mothers who have come to my house to rent or buy a
pump,19 have had their babies totally covered by a blanket in the plastic
bucket. I mean totally as in the head is covered also. Only one baby has come
to me in arms in the past 2 months.
So how is any sunshine going to get in?
People are afraid of the sun, and rightly so. They avoid deliberately
getting tanned, they baste their children with sunscreen for long days at the
beach, and avoid 10 am to 2 pm sun exposure in the summer. However, being
cautious has been expanded to protecting baby from the least drop of sun.
Now, can we prove this? I am sure that it has an effect, namely an
increase in rickets. Our mothers (I am born in 1950) were told to give us
sunbaths; there is no mention of that now in any baby care material.
    Warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MSN, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI
