Hello, Janet.
Although you may have received private messages, I haven't seen any
answers to your question about Esclim and its possible effect on milk supply, so
I'm going to give you a hypothetical answer.
I am assuming Esclim is a combination estrogen/progesterone patch used
to replace the hormones she is missing due to complete hysterectomy. If so,
then theoretically her hormone levels should be the same as any female adult
who has chosen to breastfeed an adopted baby but who has not recently given
birth. Most women in that situation can bring in some milk, usually somewhere
between 25% and 75% of the baby's nutritional needs. As long as the Esclim
patch is only giving her *replacement* levels of the hormones, she should do as
well as most adoptive breastfeeding mothers.
Where I find these hormones to cause the most problem is when they are
used in a healthy, normal female as birth control. In that situation,
because she already has the appropriate levels of these hormones being produced by
her body, the birth control pill or patch raises her levels *above normal
levels*. Then I frequently see that these hormones cause an often complete
disappearance of milk supply.
