Forgive me, but what the heck did this doc want the baby to wean to?
Given the stats on blood in stools being caused by cmp (80%) and with 50%
of these also allergic to soy protein, was he thinking of goats milk
formula or something? I'll reiterate what the pediatric
gastroenterologist, Marelle Vonlanthen, MD said...This baby needs to be
seen by a gastroenterologist (preferably a ped) and scoped!!!! Let me
know if you need her references for such an indication. (It is extremely
likely that this baby was allergic to cmp or soy, OR that there were rectal
fissures caused by vigorous cleansing with commercial baby wipes.) A
strict elimation diet of lots of different foods is NOT indicated here.
Mom should meticulously eliminate cow milk protein (and perhaps soy
simulataneously) if the scoping does not demonstrate lower bowel structural
abnormality (which it may). And, make sure this baby is not getting an
"supplemental" topping off bottles. In highly allergic babies, this could
be fatal...in the case of heavy bleeding, it will eventually lead to
iron-deficieny anemia.
