I remember we used to have a few docs that would say "I'm coming in
at...... . Please have all my circs waiting and don't feed for an
hour before." Then the doc would come in an hour or two later that
first stated! Poor babes were very unhappy with him. I think those
docs have all retired. Whenever a circ is being done, there is a
Nurse or Nurse Extender (sometimes referred to as Nurse's Aide)
assisting. This usually consists of helping hold the baby (fewer
and fewer docs are strapping the baby down on that plastic thingy),
try to comfort (usually with a pacifier or finger) and just be
available for anything else needed. This means that for those few
instances where a baby regurgitates, there is someone to turn baby's
head to the side and/or use the bulb syringe. You can usually tell
by the sound and behavior when a baby is about to "upchuck". It
happens so rarely, that we no longer have "rules" about not feeding
for X amount of time before a circ.
