Kathleen, I don't have anything wonderful to add to your post, just want
to say that I agree with you. For a long time I was one of the non-LC
breastfeeding counselors, and I wanted to be judged for my skills then,
and not just initials. As one who has been on both sides of the fence, I
can say that we all have a lot of work to do. It would be wonderful,
however, to have some agreement on various standards so that hospitals
can't get away with sending someone to a "wonder course" and then setting
them up as an 'LC'. It is so important that we all be aware of our
limitations and be willing to say when we've reached them and if there is
someone else available who knows more than we do; honesty can go a long
way. Can we work up some of our thoughts as to the various categories and
how they should/could be represented? And perhaps we need to identify
barriers to motivation for IBCLE certification and address them. Has
anyone out there made a conscious decision NOT to pursue this? If so,
why? What would you like to see different?
-Lisa
