A few additions to the nursing-in-public tricks:

I remind mothers to nurse at the first sign the baby might want to nurse,
because if you wait until the child is frantic and crying, everyone within
earshot will be watching your every move.

Secondly, I tell them not to "ask permission" or announce what they are
about to do, because it makes people nervous. They likely fear that your
breasts are about to come out and they don't know how they should respond.
If you simply go ahead and  do what needs to be done, your nonchalant
attitude puts others at ease. After all, you don't announce it when you are
going to kiss the baby or ask if others are comfortable about other ways you
care for the baby.

Finally, I tell them if they time it correctly you can direct people *away*
from you for those few seconds that it takes to get the baby latched on.
"Look over there! Isn't that Mel Gibson?"
