There was an article in the paper today about speech therapists decrying the
use of sippy cups, especially in older children. Says the action of
drinking out of a sippy cup interferes with normal mouth and tongue
development and articulartion problems in preschool children. Says that
unlike "breast and bottle" feeding, where the tongue lays flat and moves
back and forth -- drinking from a sippy cup means a lazy tongue (in essence,
I'm paraphrasing from memory). Says children should not have sippy cups
after they are able to drink from a regular glass. Implies that you need to
be off the breast or bottle by a year. Sigh. If anyone sees this article
and knows the speech therapists they quote, can you talk to them??? I don't
have the energy right now to take this on.
