I have often tried to explain this concept to moms who collect as many free
formula samples as they can, to give to food banks, crisis nurseries etc -
in the belief that they are somehow "costing" the formula co's money, and
helping poor bottlefeeding moms.
I try to explain that the "cost" of these samples are just added to the
price of the formula, so the bottlefeeding moms will just pay MORE for the
formula later, when the free samples run out. Artificially increasing the
demand for free samples, (by asking for samples you don't want for yourself)
just increases the price of the formula, and the cost burden for bottle
feeding moms.
