  I didn't realize any of this about pit at all.

I am wondering though, is oxytocin, the natural hormone, also
anti-diuretic?  Is this to keep the mom from having to urinate too
much while in labour?

I had really bad edema after my last birth and I had NO artificial
pit.  Now perhaps many other factors could have caused/contributed to
this, but I have often wondered why it got so bad AFTER and yet I
wasn't swollen in any big way before the birth.
