There was just a segment on the NBC's Today Show, Saturday am, on Ear
Infections and Children. Dr. Mark Windome was the expert interviewed. When
they announced the topic, I rolled my eyes and muttered to myself, they
better mention breastfeeding. Knowing either they wouldn't, or if they
did, it would be the usual wishy-washy back peddling to <ahem> avoid
guilt. Well, I was very pleasantly surprised. Within the segment, Dr.
Windome specifically and clearly said: "Breastfeed. Breastfeeding reduces
the number of ear infections by approximately 50%. Probably because of the
antibodies passed along in the milk while breastfeeding." He also said "If
you are bottle feeding, do it in an upright posistion so the milk doesn't
collect and keep bacteria in the back of the throat. This is probably
another reason why breastfeeding helps- babies tend to nurse in a slightly
raised position.". He also stated that pacifier use was a contributing
factor to ear infections. Under the graphic list, "Breastfeed" was the
first thing listed, and not once did he say "BF if you can, blah blah". It
was just, "Breastfeed".
How refreshing!
