Linda, your experience illustrates just why we're in the middle of a
vitamin D pandemic, even amongst those who seemingly shouldn't be D
deficient.

In virtually all of the US, even with sun exposure, it's only possible
to get sufficient levels of D from sun during the summer months and
then only with midday exposure and *no* sunscreen - ow much time and
how much skin needs to be exposed will vary depending on skintone.
It's that difficult.   And even someone who does get optimal levels
during the summer months (ie everyday outside most skin exposed to the
point just before burning would occur), levels will begin to fall off
in the fall, continuing to fall throughout the winter and spring.
It's suprising to most that even when there is enough sun to tan or
burn, there is not necessarily enough to make sufficient D.

Yup.  It's so common.   Multi's and cal/d supplements don't have enough D.

The Vitamin D council's current recommendation is 1000 IU per 25 lbs
body weight....dependent partly though on how much exposure one gets
from sun.    I do need 6000 IU D per day (1000 IU per 25 lbs body
weight) to maintain optimal levels.

It's not suprising.  The amount of D in milk and yogurt is minimal.
One study indicated 'x' comsumtion of milk didn't change 25(OH)D
levels.  I can't recall how much milk is was per day and don't have
time to look it up, so it's possible that while it's barely enough to
prevent rickets  in a very small child (and definitely not enough to
replete D levels, just prevent the most obvious severe acute sign of
deficiency) it's  no where near enough to have any appreciable effect
D levels in a larger person.

It is *everyone* - needing to be tested that is.  And most will need
some level of supplementation part of the year to all of the year
depending on wether they're willing and able to get D from sun.   For
some (more than one might think), it's simply not possible to get D
from sun ever.
