Dear Joy and Lactnetters:

When you are calculating the costs of breastfeeding or not
breastfeeding, please do your OWN homework. I say this because if you
are trying to 'sell' based on costs, you've got to quote LOCAL data!
Please don't embarrass yourselves and undermine your argument by quoting
prices/costs from other locations. No one in New York City is going to
care what the price of ABM is in Lexington, KY.

It is EASY to collect this data yourself -- just gather it the next time
you're grocery shopping. If you want to be fair, go to several
locations.

Peanut butter: 2T/day x 365 days = 730 T/year. The jar will say how
many T = 1 serving (I think it's 2T/1serving), and how many servings are
in each jar; you do the math! (apologies to non-US folks, whose labels
may not have this info.)

ABM: If you use 14,500 oz. needed to feed infant for one year, then you
can do your own calculations based on various types of ABM and
concentrations/formats (bovine vs. soy, conc vs. rtf vs. powder)

Also, don't forget the ancillary equipment: pumps, bottles, nipples,
warmers, nursing bras, etc. May not be used by everyone, but nice to
give a range of prices.

If you REALLY want to get detailed, you can also include utilities costs
for water, electricity, gas for ABM prep and clean-up, transportation
for getting ABM, etc.

But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get the costs from your own neighborhoods and
cities!!!
