Dear Ms. Whatley, 

It has come to my attention that Ronald McDonald House in Houston  is violating  Texas State law (165.001 et seq., 1995) by refusing to allow the mother of a critically ill child to nurse where ever she has the right to be. I would also like to say that Ronald McDonald House cannot justly or humanely solve this problem by forcing this mother to leave the Ronald McDonald House while her child is ill and in the hospital.

Of all the places that a mother has a right to be, I think a Ronald McDonald House is right up there near the top.  Ronald McDonald Houses have been established to provide compassionate living conditions for parents of hospitalized children.

As a pediatric nurse practitoner I know that breastfeeding is important to babies and children in a very special way.  When you are sick, it is even more important in terms of nutrition and comfort.  To deny this to a child is cruel and goes against everything a Ronald McDonald House stands for.  To try and regulate when and where a mother may nurse is stressing an already stressed family.  In addition it is against Texas State law, as I mentioned before.  

I would hope that Ronald McDonald House in Houston would seek to become a "mother friendly" site as mention in the law. (Section 165.003)
