<What she has found online and from her GP suggests it has to do with postpartum hormones and the only thing that resolves it is to wean.>

Heavens to Betsy, as my grandma used to say! I can only imagine the sponsor of the link that gave that information!!! Tell her that the "postpartum hormone related to let-down reflex" e.g. oxytocin is the same "mysterious" hormone of love she has experienced during orgasm, and the prolactin is the same hormone that built to a very high level as she reached term in her pregnancy. As for the rest of them that have changed postpartum, it involves mostly a steep drop in estrogen and progesterone! Someone commercial entity is playing on her desperation here and her doctor of all people ought to know better!

<One potential (hoping it might be this) is that her mom has been doing her laundry, including sheets.>

From my mom (3/4 of a century ago) to hers: I suggest that 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar be added to a second rinse for every load of her laundry (and the baby's laundry too, with no special laundry soaps needed) and than absolutely nothing be put in the dryer like dryer sheets, etc. For now, all towels and sheets and undergarments that her mom washed should be re-rinsed as I suggested. Especially her bath towels, which touch her skin when her pores are warm and open after she showers. Then have her shower again ASAP using one of these towels afterward!
