I have to say that I always encourage moms to nurse, whether they smoke or
not. I work at WIC parttime as a breastfeeding counselor, and many of my
clients smoke, or their partners do (as evidenced by the smell that clings to
their clothes and hair). As an ex-smoker myself, I know that they will
usually not stop smoking just to breastfeed, especially if they have smoked
during their pregnancy. I also believe that each smoker will quit when they
are ready. I quit at the beginning of my 2nd pregnancy, and hope never to
start again. I have to be careful not to be anti-smoking, but rather pro-
breastfeeding in my capacities as LLLL and WIC Peer Counselor. A mom that
feels that I am judging her choice to smoke is less likely to call me for
information and help.
I believe Dr. Jack Newman posted recently about the nicotine patch not being
contraindicated during BF. You could check the archives :-).
