Re: bf and Zyban to quit smoking. One thing that this newly delivered
mother may not realize is that the program to quit smoking with Zyban begins
with *three weeks* of continued smoking WHILE taking the medication. Zyban's
reported side effects (as per Hale and as per the manufacturer's insert -
restlessness, agitation, insomnia, etc) are not ones that would seem to be
tolerable to a new mother. Zyban and nicotine in the system of a newborn
baby does seem as though it could present problems! This is not to say that
I would encourage the new mom *not* to quit smoking, but to weigh the various
pros and cons very seriously before making a decision at this time. She can
take lots of steps to minimize the negative effects of smoking on her
breastfeeding infant; she also must realize that continued smoking and *not*
breastfeeding would be the least healthy choice for her baby.

Lisa Jones, LLLL in Wellington, FL - whose dh is taking Zyban at the moment
after a 20 year/2 pack a day habit, I mean, addiction...
