For some years I coordinated all the prenatal classes. I created alot of
handouts for different classes including exit surveys for patients to
return. One of the surveys was actually a letter for the new mom to mail
back to the childbirth instructor after she delivered. At the bottom of the
letter I placed the following statement:

There is no comparison to a mother's milk, we hope that breastfeeding your
baby is going well for you. If you have any questions or comments regarding
breastfeeding, please call our Lactation Consultants at The Trident
Lactation Department 797-4554.

This went fine as long as I was in charge of the classes, I always sent my
new material through the marketing department for them to place the
hospital logo on and make any changes the felt were needed. No one ever
really altered my materials, but 5 years and 4 marketing directors later...
the current marketing department director felt that the above statement was
not open minded enough and that someone who plans to formula feed might
think that our hospital is pushing breastfeeding. I had alot to say about
that but none of which she listened to, in the end, it was one of the very
very few things she changed about my handouts.

She had her first baby a few months later and exclusively breastfeeds. This
has not made her any more an advocate for breastfeeding, we still give out
formula bags.

In a for-profit hospital, when will it change? I guess only when the
largest law suits are from mothers who sue the hospital for sending them
home with samples of formula or give formula in the hospital without telling
them all the risks involved.

What about making the formula commercials be more like the commercials for
other drugs, at the end of the beautiful commercial on "comfort proteins"
the announcer could say: common side effects are blah blah blah...
unresolved diarrhea and death have occurred.
