New reasons for weaning: Got a phone call from a mom who "had to quit
breastfeeding right away" and need info on how to do so safely. Upon
further inquiry, this mother of an 8-week-old baby was troubled with
vaginal flow (bloody) continuing since parturition and concluded that since
her doctor told her it was caused by hormones, and lactation was governed
by hormones, that she would have to quit breastfeeding in order to make the
vaginal flow stop. She admitted coming to this conclusion on her own,
without any directive to wean from her physician. In support of her
theory, she noted that there was a "gush" when she first began nursing in
the morning after a six- to seven-hour sleep.

I think I convinced her to continue breastfeeding, at least for the time
being, and will talk to her physician in his office tomorrow. On a related
topic, I had a mom motion me frantically into her room at the hospital to
tell me she had flow after she delivered. She apparently thought one pops
the baby out, and immediately one reverts to a pre-pregnant condition. My
colleague gave her a brief explanation of the physiology of the situation.
