I Googled 'lactation consultant' yesterday and got more than 20 non-commercial links. Didn't bother looking after the first 20 because you don't with Google, do you? Most of the links I found were to GB sites, but I was referred as far afield as Australia. Can't remember whether any US sites came up, actually. But Abbott and Lifecare were nowhere to be seen, so I didn't take any further action.
Just for fun I tried 'laktasjonskonsulent' on Norwegian Google and got 1 hit, to a private chat website that quoted something on our BF org website about fenugreek for low supply in which the chat participant quoted a 1999 article in Norwegian where the term 'laktasjonskonsulent' was used. I probably translated the article in question, and that was the year before I took the exam myself. At that point there was exactly one IBCLC here, and she's now the country coordinator for IBLCE. (I think there are 13 or 14 IBCLCs now, not sure!) Then I tried 'ammespesialist' which is how we have translated LC - literally 'breastfeeding specialist' and we add IBCLC after it if we're talking about an IBCLC. Got hits to my IBCLC colleagues here who have private practices, and to my delight also some hits to a mother's discussion board where Gonneke's technique for dealing with persistent engorgement and oversupply (complete drainage and block feeding) was referred to, with numerous testimonials from mothers who had found it very helpful. We published a description of the technique on the BF org website with reference to her article in IBJ a couple of years ago - nice to see it is being noticed. It was the article on our org website that the mothers had been using. (Thanks again Gonneke - I have yet to see an oversupply situation that didn't improve with your technique.)

To sum up: not one commercial hit there either :-)

So, yes, it seems this is mainly a problem for users in the US. Still a big problem given the number of users there, but reassuring that Abbott have not achieved total world domination yet.
