The question is asked: "Does anyone have a succinct, easily understood way
of explaining the WHO code to lay people to help them decide which products
to use, if and when they are needed?"

Hmm. This is almost a trick question. As IBCLCs, we can discuss ANY
product with ANY mother in ANY clinical context involving breastfeeding and
human lactation. Bottles, teats and formula -- the products covered by the
WHO Code -- are all appropriately purchased by a mother, or recommended for
use by an IBCLC, given circumstances where (as you note) they are needed.

I like the way IBFAN describes some of the unethical marketing practices
that the WHO Code aims to prevent: go to www.ibfan.org and click the tab
marked "The Issue" and then "How Breastfeeding is Undermined."
