The correct spelling is Atarax and it is also known as  Vistaril.  I know it 
is used as a potentiator to IV pain meds (like  Demerol) and also as an 
anitemetic (anti nausea).  I haven't seen it  prescribed per se as a way to stop 
allergic reactions.  It does help with  itching, it was prescribed to me because 
one of the side effects of terbutaline  (eye roll) for my preterm labor was 
severe itching.  It didn't help AT ALL  lol.  I don't have my drug book handy to 
give you the full scoop right  here, but if I find out more...will be glad to 
let you know.
