I do have some info but it may not be what you are looking for. Children in
NICUs are at risk of attachment difficulties (not attaching at the breast-
attachment in terms of being able to form a trusting relationship with their
primary caregiver) because of the spmetimes painful procedures thet undergo,
limited contact with mother etc. However, suckling has a calming effect,
reduces pain and metabolic rate and in gaining comfort from the mother this
promotes attachment. Suckling is attachment behaviour directed at the
mother. Sucking on a dummy is sucking on a substitute mother. I can dig out
refs if you like (some are very old- go back to Bowlby etc).
I can't right now because I'm just on my way to take my daughter to the
