Yesterday's Sunday Mail (Brisbane) had a report about pricey items being marketed to parents for babies, and their popularity among older parents. The report mentioned that fashion designers such as Dior have found the baby market (or, more accurately, the *parent* market) a new area to enter. If these products are sold here in Aust, I'm sure they are seen in other countries. The article gave prices of dummies (pacifiers) for $45 and nursing bottles for "up to $49". (I wonder if that is with or without a teat?)
The proprietor of a shop was quoted as saying:
"Some people think its spoiling our children but I think it's spoiling ourselves because the children have no idea. For a new baby you can buy a bunch of flowers for $45 and they will eventually die or you can pay the same amount and get a dummy that can become a keepsake."
Now, they could breastfeed and use the money they *didn't* spend on a designer bottle (or a set of them) to buy something much nicer as a keepsake - but that's not marketing, is it?
My point? Marketing creates a "need", and people will buy, espec if it's baby-related.
