Alicia, your story reminds me of several of babies I've had contact with,
each in the first few days. In each case, improving the latch worked
wonders - the latch looked okay, felt okay - but with encouragement and
guidance the mothers managed to get their babies to take a better 'mouthful
of breast', the babies became immediately alert, fed actively, came off the
breast spontaneously and seemed to take off from there. In each case, we
positioned the baby so the nipple pointed at his nose, then worked hard on
bringing the baby to the breast, head/neck straight, nipple aimed to the
roof of the mouth, chin and lower lip touching the breast first so a really
good amount of breast 'below' the nipple was taken in.
