Hi Barbara,

I saw a baby with exact same situation yesterday. I googled it and it could be geniospasm which could also involve the tongue - quite rare actually. I have emailed the GP I work with to ask his opinion but good to know that this is a "thing". She did tell me she had a similar situation with her other two babies and only breastfed for 3 months. It can be hereditary. She is so frustrated with on/off at the breast which I am sure is because of this. Otherwise the baby is thriving. From what I read it can either go away as the baby matures or could be lifelong.

Will let you know if I find out more.

Warm regards,

Jenny Lynn RN IBCLC

Dear Friends,
I have a 7 day old baby who is having trouble with latching on. The
thing about her is her whole chin quivers sometimes when she is feeding
or randomly while awake or sleeping. I am not talking about a tongue
quiver, a flutter suck, like babies do when they are falling asleep or
having tongue fatigue. I mean the chin is quite pointy and the point
quickly pulls up quickly toward her tongue in her closed mouth, many
times in a row. Almost like the chin is attached to the floor of her
mouth and it is pulling it up and in. I am hoping the mother will send
me a video. After 19 years in the business I have not seen this before.
Thoughts on what this might be and how to help?
Thank you in advance.
