Dear friends,

I very occasionally have time to read lacnet these days, but I wanted to
tell you all about this experience Iīm having and since I see there is a
thread on cradle vs. crosscradle vs. whatever works, itīs a good time to
write.
This past summer, I had the privilege of spending a day with Cathy Genna and
seeing babies self attach, one a three week old and another a two month old,
both with latch issues. For me it was a revealing, eye-poping and moving
experience. So Iīve been trying it out. Iīve also seen Kitty Franzīs great
DVD on this topic, and that has helped. For the last couple of months I have
seen babies from ten days to three months self attach at their motherīs
breast. They do the perfect asymmetric latch ALL BY THEMSELVES. And the
looks on motherīs (and fatherīs) faces are wonderful to watch. Sometimes the
reason that they come into my office for is complex and not resolved merely
by this great latch (although obviously it helps inmensely) but what is
truly great is that, when a mother sees her baby bob his head, move and
slide by himself down her chest until he finds the breast, then bob some
more until he is perfectly and painlessly attached, at that moment the
mother (and father, if heīs there) GETS the point of what baby-led
breastfeeding means, they are amazed that the baby KNOWS what he has to do.

Yesterday a mom came in with an 8 day old baby girl with a unilateral cleft
lip. The mom said: I try and try to get her attached, at the hospital they
helped and I got a lot of support, but none of us could do it. I said, well
maybe SHE can do it, because actually sheīs the one who knows how. And, lo
and behold, there goes that lovely little girl, crawls and bobs on her
motherīs chest and latches on perfectly, in a strange diagonal position,
with momīs breast tissue covering her lip defect, and starts suckling like a
champ. The mom and dad where crying and I had to kind of pretend that I
wasnīt.

So if any of you out there have not seen or tried this, please do! It is a
true lesson in humility... Iīm not saying itīs any substitute for our
knowledge about breastfeeding positions and techniches and other
interventios that may be necessary, but I firmly think this total hands-off
aproach should be the first step. Here in Spain my colleagues and I are
calling it TNT "tecnica de la no tecnica" (technique of no technique) - and
it truly is pure dynamite.

Have a great day!

Warmly from Spain,
Kika
