I may have mentioned this in past posts, if so, please forgive my
repetition.
When I find a mom who is really "hung up" on wanting a number of
minutes in spite of everything else I say, I have used this
approach:

"Yes, most babies probably finish a feeding in 10-20 minutes, but
that's 10-20 minutes of ACTIVE SUCKLING. However, during a feeding,
babies pause; sometimes they revert to non nutritive sucking briefly
as a sort of pause. Therefore, it takes different amounts of time
to get that 10-20 minutes in. If you really feel you must time the
feeding, you would need a stopwatch which you would click on when
baby is actively sucking and off when not - e.g.:sucking---not
sucking---sucking---not sucking. Or you could just watch baby for
cues and forget about trying to time the feeding."

I have yet to have a mom rush to try to find a stopwatch, although
it's possible I will at some time. So far, when I've used this
approach, mom relaxes and says "I guess it would be easier just to
watch the baby." I have also found that using this scenario with
docs who want to tell moms to limit the time and have found that
some of them will rethink their position.
Winnie IBCLC - who must now rush to get to work early enough so I
can get home and prepare for the first of a weekend full of
Christmas (Oops, should that be Holiday?) parties.
