I'm finding this discussion very helpful. I've been using Diane's idea
(thanks, Diane!) of referring to cross-cradle (and football) as training
wheels, and cradle as a mall position (though one mom who had very sore
nipples at 24 hrs. pp thought I meant *maul* position!) fairly
successfully, but Cathy Watson Genna referred to cross-cradle as the
*transitional* hold, and it strikes me that this name may get the point
across that this is a position to transition through the early days,
progressing to the more traditional cradle hold once nursing is
consistently comfortable and effective.
I always discuss the use of the side-lying position, and show a video in
classes that includes a demonstration of this; but maybe I do need to
get down on the floor with a couple of pillows and actually demonstrate
this in class, too. Thanks for the food for thought, and I look forward
to others contributions to this discussion.
