An older LC whom I have always considered very wise spoke at a conference I
went to years ago about how gas was a biproduct of digestion of protein.
She explained that everyone has some gas "you, me, grandpa" - and that it is
simply more noticeable in small babies. She would tell moms complaining
about their babies being gassy that in general gas was a good thing - it
simply meant that they were getting milk for the first time and that the mom
obviously had plenty of milk. Suddenly moms felt more confident and didn't
worry so much about the gas. She would also expalin about the intestinal
tract being full of air in newborns becaue, after the meconium, breasstmilk
feeds didn't produce a large volume of waste. I don't really know if this is
technically true,in the scientific sense, but it alwasy made sense to me.
 Hope this helps.
