It is just amazing how clipping a frenulum can make such a big difference!!
In our hospital, the pediatric dentist does the clipping. He uses topical
anesthesia and the babies hardly cry.

This week we had an interesting case.
I met a mom in our hospital's booth at the baby fair last week. ( we had a
lovely breastfeeding corner). She had been suffering for 3 weeks from
unbearable nipple pain. There was milk transfer but the baby's tongue was
not extending enough to pass beyond nipple tissue.
Mom went to an IBCLC who told her that everything was fine and that she
would eventually get used to the pain. She did not look into the baby's
mouth!!
Actually, the resulting incorrect suck rhythm was quite obvious even without
looking into the baby's mouth, but I thought oral examination should be a
basic step in assessing :"unexplained nipple pain."
We clipped the frenulum on Sunday. The pain dropped from 8-9 to 4-5
immediately and yesterday the mom called to say that the pain is a faint
memory, and that for the first time she actually looks forward to
breastfeeding instead of dreading it!!

I may be wrong,I don't think severe nipple pain should ever be cast off as
" you'll get used to it eventually".
Aaaaaaaaaaargh!!
