It sounds like the report Kikki cited referred to healing but I
wonder if it dealt with mom's perception.  I find that, in addition
to correcting the original cause, making the nipples feel better
while healing occurs can be very important.  Moms usually report
that purified lanolin, gel pads, or even old fashioned tea bags
(which have also been proved not to contribute to actual healing) do
"feel good".  Therefore, as long as they do no harm to mom or babe,
I see nothing wrong with adding such a "soother" to mom's treatment
as long as she understands that following the recommendations
regarding position, latch or whatever are the key to long range
"cure" of the problem.  A lot of pain is in the nerve endings of the
beholder!
